Board edger series

EG24

A stand-alone edger for turning flitches and slab offcuts into square-edged timber. Two blades - one fixed, one movable - take both edges in a single pass, so an offcut comes back as a saleable board instead of firewood. Blade position is set from the operator side and marked by two red lasers, and the folding fence and return rollers let one man feed the machine and take the board off again without walking round it. It comes either on a road-registerable trailer or on a fixed base; the cut is the same.

Figures are for the EG24 with both feed tables fitted, on the 14 hp petrol engine. The trailer model is shown throughout this page; the ground model is the same machine on a fixed base.

Two ways to mount it

The edger comes either on a road-registerable trailer or on a fixed base. The cut is identical - same blades, same feed speed, same capacity. The question is only whether the machine travels with you or stays in the yard.

Ground model

The same machine on a base with adjustable legs instead of a trailer. Order this one when the edger stays where it is put and the timber comes to it.

A fixed position in the yard or the mill shed

What it does well

  • Edges both sides of a flitch in one pass, so offcuts come back as saleable boards instead of firewood
  • Two blades, one fixed and one movable, with the movable blade set from the operator side
  • Red laser guides mark both sides of the cut, so the operator is not sighting along the board
  • Feeds at 8.8 m/min - fast enough to keep up with the mill that is feeding it

What's included

  • Edger with both blades fitted and set
  • In-feed and out-feed tables with return rollers
  • Folding board fence and the two laser guides
  • Tool kit and operating manual

How it works

The assemblies that decide how the cut comes out.

Folding fence and return rollers

Folding fence and return rollers

The board runs against an adjustable fence that sets how much of the edge the blades take off, and folds down out of the way when the machine is not in use. Two heavy-duty return rollers carry the board back over the top of the blades, so the operator takes it off on the same side he fed it from.

Blade width set from the operator side

Blade width set from the operator side

One blade is fixed and the other moves along its shaft to set the finished width. The setting is made from the operator side of the machine, standing where he feeds from, so width changes between boards are a single adjustment rather than a walk round to the far side.

Road kit on the trailer model

Road kit on the trailer model

The trailer model carries a ball coupling, a jockey wheel and a height-adjustable drawbar, so it can be hitched to a pickup and levelled on uneven ground once it is in position. Lights and a VIN are supplied for road registration.

Petrol engine and belt drive

Petrol engine and belt drive

A 14 hp petrol engine drives the two blades through belt drives, with the belts taking the shock when the blades meet a knot or a nail. An electric-drive version is available for yards that already have three-phase power.

Frequently asked questions

Should I order the trailer model or the ground model?

Order the trailer model if the edger has to travel - contract edging, or a yard where the timber arrives in different places. It can be registered for the road and towed behind a pickup. Order the ground model if the edger will sit in one spot and the board will be brought to it; it is 134 kg lighter and 700 mm narrower, which matters in a shed. The cut is identical on both.

Where does the edger fit in a sawmill line?

After the mill has broken the log down. The mill produces flitches and slabs with two sawn faces and two wany edges; the edger squares the wany edges off in one pass and hands back dimension timber. Keeping that job off the mill lets the mill stay on log breakdown, which is where the output gain comes from.

Can it edge more than one board at a time?

No - it edges one board per pass, at 8.8 m/min. What the two blades give you is both edges in the same pass: you feed a flitch once and it comes out square on both sides. A ripper kit is available as an option for splitting a wide board into two narrower ones on the same pass.
